Does God Still Heal Today?

This question looms in the minds of many, especially in the hearts and minds of sick Christians. Does God still heal today? The question carries so much significance that we surely need to know the answer. Yes, I believe we can know the answer.

The Gospels, specifically Matthew, Mark, and Luke, clearly speak about God healing all those who were sick through His Son, Jesus. In Matthew Chapter 10, Jesus sends out the 12 disciples. Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

Wait, it did not end there! In Luke Chapter 10:1-23, Jesus sent out 70-72. The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” This portion of Scripture, rich in detail, tells us God, through Jesus, gives His followers authority to do His works on the earth.

The Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20 reveals Jesus’ command to His disciples to go and make more disciples, and they make more disciples, and they make, well, you get the point!

In Mark 16:15-18, He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Disciples today have the same authority, because we serve the same Jesus. Hebrews 13:8 - Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. If healing was only for the time of Jesus and the Apostles, that would mean that God is a respector of persons, and that those people needed healing, but anyone after that does not. Romans 2:11 tells us that God is no respecter of persons. He holds no one over another. He also reveals His will, which is His Word. His compassion is for all generations.

In Matthew, after Jesus comes out of the wilderness where He was tempted by the devil, He immediately begins healing people of all kinds of diseases. We see the character of God, the power of God, and the will of God moving through Jesus. He turns no one away.

You see, Jesus was in heaven just a few short years before He came to earth. He knows what His Father’s will is (Matthew 6:10). He was there in the beginning, when God created mankind in His likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). There is no sickness in heaven, and He prayed heaven on earth.

So, why don’t some people get healed? I don’t know the answer, but what I do know is that it is not on God’s part. He does not use sickness to teach a lesson, or give us sickness as a blessing. Both of those excuses go against God’s character and His Word.

Read through the Gospel of Matthew and notate all the instances where Jesus healed, where His disciples healed. Look for divine gold nuggets to teach us about God’s will to heal today.

I believe it is safe to say God is still sending out disciples today to share the good news of the Gospel and lay hands on the sick, and He heals them. To all those who believe.

There is much to explore about Christ the Healer. Join me next Sunday as we continue our short study on God’s will to heal.

Remember, the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.
