Which Lens Are You Looking Through?

You can call it rose-colored glasses. Some call it glass half empty or glass half full. The word perspective comes to mind. It really is how we see things, or is there more to it? Let’s ask the question: How does God see things? And can we see the same way?

When I think of the word see, I think of glasses, like these. We will use sunglasses as an illustration of the different ways people see things. In this illustrated demonstration, I see” two lenses. The lens of love and the lens of sin. Each contains characteristics that cause a person to see things a certain way. The lens of love is God’s way of viewing things. The lens of sin is the way of the world in which the enemy of God operates. We get to choose which glasses to wear.

Let’s compare some of the characteristics of these two lenses. I think this will help us know which one to choose. We will look at the lens of sin first, since most people are probably most familiar with this one.

The Lens of Sin:

  • It is obviously sin-focused

  • It takes offence

  • Focuses on legalism

  • It has a victim mindset

  • It takes ownership - this is mine, I have a right

  • It speaks with a critical spirit

  • It always leads towards death

  • It walks in fear, doubt, and unbelief

  • It keeps a defeated lifestyle - glass half empty

    The Lens of Love

  • Is righteous focused - God’s way

  • It offers grace and mercy

  • It focuses on forgiveness

  • It has a victory mindset

  • It trusts God in all things

  • It speaks the truth - in love

  • It always leads to life

  • It walks in peace

  • It has a kingdom perspective

Now, how do we choose? Some may think it depends on our upbringing, the ‘cards you were dealt,” or the opportunities or lack of opportunities you had. But, if I may interject those thoughts by calling attention to the object that stands in between these two lenses - Our heart or soul. That part of who we are that houses our mind, our will, and our emotions.

We think with our minds. We decide with our will. We allow our emotions to follow our decisions, not the other way around. If you hear these two lists and you see yourself in one - the lens of sin- and you want to wear the glasses of the other - the lens of love. Have a come-to-Jesus meeting with your heart. Engage your mind to switch glasses. Change your perspective to what could be if you wear the lens of love. Tell your emotions to take a back seat while you try on this pair of glasses to see how God wants you to see life. Especially since God is the life-giver.

To summarize, there are two different lenses we choose to wear, the lens of sin or the lens of love. We get to choose. The glasses we wear determine our perspective on life. How we think things are or how they really are. What stands in the middle is us. That part of us that can think, then choose, then follow. I hope and pray that today you choose to follow the path laid out for you by God, the Great Designer. If you do, you will see things in a way you could have never imagined. Not in a good way. Not in a bad way. But God’s Way.
